VGS invites you to spend the day at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, Va., with Anne Mitchell, a.k.a. Ancestry Anne, as she shares her knowledge of Ancestry research strategies.

Pre-Conference Event (free)

17 April, Friday, VGS invites you to join our experienced researchers at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, Va., who will answer questions, provide individual assistance to beginners, and offer strategies for solving difficult genealogical problems. Pre-registration is not required.

10:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m.

Experienced researchers will be available in Conference Room “C” on the 1st floor of the Library. Please complete a consultation form and submit it to admin@vgs.org in advance for the best results.

Please note: There is limited seating at the Library of Virginia (LVA) and we suggest that you register early to ensure that you get a seat. Once we reach the maximum number of attendees, we will close registration.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

9:15-10:15 Cluster, Huddle or Flock: Research Strategies for Your Ancestors. Everyone has brick walls in their genealogy research. People who appear to have been dropped out of the sky. Women whose maiden names seem to be unknowable. Cluster research will give you new avenues to break down those brick walls by researching their family members, their neighbors and anyone and everyone they were associated with. We will explore methodologies that will help you uncover new information about your family.

10:45-11:45 Hidden Treasures at Ancestry. Ancestry is always updating and adding in new collections. We review what’s new and interesting and some old favorites that you may have not known about.

1:30-2:30 Your Ancestors’ Civil War Experience. Start with some new content, add in existing records and a lot of data science, and you will have a brand new look at your ancestors’ lives during the Civil War. Ancestry has created a new experience for you to enjoy. We look at how it was created and what you will find.

3:00-4:00 Clues in Death Records: Obits, Find A Grave and Other Death Records. Death records hold the best and sometimes the most interesting clues about our ancestors’ lives. And these records are found everywhere. We will look at the how Newspapers.com has taken obits to a new level, dig into Find A Grave so you get the most out of it, and review other death records you may have missed on Ancestry and Fold3.
