Event description

Description

The goal is unarguable: Australia must transition to a CO2-free economy. Indeed, with climate change accelerating, the same is true throughout the world. But exactly what might our energy mix look like when we get there? Debate rages.

In this special Research Tuesdays forum, three leading University of Adelaide energy researchers will dissect the issues, highlight the opportunities and explain the exciting science powering the push to renewables.

Can concentrating solar thermal help reduce fossil-fuel reliance in mining and heavy industry? Could Australia help satisfy rising international demand for hydrogen fuels, such as in Japan and Korea? Are more sustainable batteries on the horizon? And what energy potential does plant biomass hold?

We invite you to come and find out.

The presenters

Professor Gus Nathan directs the University of Adelaide’s Centre for Energy Technology. He is the recipient of an ARC Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award, and in 2014 was recognised by the Australian Institute of Energy as its inaugural Energy Professional of the year (SA).

Professor Rachel Burton heads the University of Adelaide’s Department of Plant Science. She is also a former leader of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls’ South Australian node, and was a Chief Investigator in the centre’s research program. She has a particular interest in the use of plant biomass for renewable energy and feedstock.

David Vowles is a senior electrical and electronic engineer in the University of Adelaide’s Power Systems Dynamics Group. He regularly collaborates with government and the power industry on high-level R&D to enhance power system performance control, analysis and modelling.
