Event Details

The University of Glasgow's Annual Research Staff Conference is aimed at postdoctoral researchers and Research Fellows from all four Colleges. Please book a place and reserve your workshop choices from the programme below. It's fine to flit in and out of the event, just attending the sessions you're interested in. However, it's important that you let us know when you do plan to be there so we book catering and allocate room sizes accordingly, and also make sure noone misses out due to events being full.   Topics so far include open research publishing, the REF and what it means for ECRs, public engagement and making Fellowship applications.

A1. Tracking research reputation: Publication metrics,  altmetrics, SciVal… there are several ways of tracking who is reading, discussing and citing your research. How can you track and benchmark your performance, and use it to manage and enhance your research reputation?  What steps can you take to boost your professional profile and maximise your chances of getting future grants and new collaborators?  Alice Gee (Policy and Business Intelligence Manager, MVLS) and William Nixon (Assistant Director of Digital Strategy, University Library) will provide an overview of tools and strategies to help you manage your research reputation.

A2. Making successful grant applications Prof Gerry Graham, Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, will provide insight and practical advice into the grant application process. This session is likely to be most relevant to researchers in the sciences.

A3. Making the most of your Postdoc in Arts and Humanities: This session aims to help postdoctoral researchers gain a better understanding of the wider research landscape they are operating within and routes to academic career development in the Arts and Humanities. Led by Prof Jennifer Smith (School of Critical Studies) it will discuss issues such as balancing different roles and responsibilities and making Fellowship applications.

B1. Metadata for Reproducibility: Explore the information needed for good reproducibility through the medium of Lego.

B2. The Innovator’s Mindset and how to use it to move forward in your career This session will consider the challenges and opportunities offered by a career in industry and advice for early-career scientists on what it takes to be successful.

B3. Creating an inclusive research environment  This practical and interactive session will include discussion of the factors that contribute to making the research environment uniquely interesting and exciting but also, at times, potentially very challenging. What opportunity do ECRs have to influence in this area and build a culture that they would like to work in?
