When his constituents needed him most, St. Rep. Craig Eiland stepped up and provided the strong leadership they needed to recover from Hurricane Ike.
First, Eiland helped convince the UT regents to keep UTMB on the island. Then he persuaded his colleagues – as they were voting to cut the state budget – - to spend more than $360 million for repairs to colleges and public schools in Galveston and Chambers Counties.
Matching funds from private sources and the FEMA brought the total investment to almost $1.2 billion – thanks to Eiland’s leadership.
For his tireless efforts, the Galveston Daily News named him “Citizen of the Year and Texas Monthly named him one of the Top 10 Legislators.
But Hurricane Ike recovery is only part of the Eiland story.
Eiland is a strong advocate for coastal homeowners covered by the Texas Windstorm Association. As an influential member of the House Appropriations Committee, he has helped craft nine balanced state budgets in a row.
After reform-minded members elected a new Republican Speaker in 2009, Eiland was named Speaker Pro Tempore, a clear sign of the respect he has earned from his colleagues. Lutheran Homes, the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Retired Teachers Association have all recognized Eiland for his work.
Craig arrived in Galveston in 1988 after earning a business degree and a law degree at Baylor. His law practice has included helping area school districts, business and homeowners recover money owed by insurance companies after Hurricane Ike.
