Description

Abbey Arts presents CATHEDRALS XXXIV:

Over the Rhine,

Katie Kuffel

Live @ St Mark's Cathedral, Seattle

10/2/20

7:30p show, 6:30 doors

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

OVER THE RHINE: https://overtherhine.com/
When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Rolling Stone recently wrote, Over the Rhine is a band “with no sign of fatigue, whose moment has finally arrived.” That’s quite a sentiment for a band celebrating 30 years of writing, recording, and life on the road. But as Karin Bergquist states, “There is still so much music left to be made.” Love & Revelation, the new album from Over the Rhine, is a record for right now. The songs have been rigorously road tested and burst at the seams with loss, lament, and resilient hope. The LA Times writes, “The Ohio based husband and wife duo has long been making soul-nourishing music, and the richness only deepens.”

Katie Kuffel is a tongue-in-cheek, Seattle-based musician smashing the piano in a manner that's not quite blues, not quite folk, and not quite like anything you've heard before. With songwriting that is both innovative and thoughtful, she explores community, feminism, and her personal experiences as an advocate against sexism and violence, with a contemporary sound that supports turbulent, poetic lyrics.Classically trained in the cello, Katie began songwriting at an early age, composing original works with her instructors when her family inherited an old, upright piano (now housed in her Seattle apartment). She has since expanded to incorporate vocal looping and ukulele in her music. Katie stands by her belief that an artist is only as successful as their community, and strives to collaborate, support, and create opportunities for other Seattle-area musicians through projects, curation, and performance.

OTHER UNUSUAL EVENT DETAILS:

SEATING:
To create a "giant living room" effect we offer an unusual concert experience with informal seating on the floor up front surrounding the stage and lots of pews, benches, and chairs around the space.

We highly recommend you bring blankets and cushions to create a more comfortable experience whether sitting on the floor or seats. Quiet and non-messy snacks/picnics are allowed. No outside alcohol please.

For best sound, arrive early for center floor area and any area on stage not marked with signage. You can also sit all around the back of the stage if you like but sound will be a bit limited there.

QUIET POLICY:

Please actually silence all devices. Turn off vibrate, rings, etc.
If you need your phone on vibrate for specific reasons, please keep it close to you and not on a hard surface that will distract your neighbor.

If arriving late, please be advised that ushers may hold doors during each song due to acoustics of the space.

NO CAMERAS WITH MECHANICAL SHUTTERS (This goes for Press too unless approved to shoot during applause only.) That means silent digital cameras/photos are ok but we really recommend you enjoy most of the show through your own 'retina screens'.

Anyone exhibiting loud or disruptive behavior during the event will be asked to leave.

Absolutely no talking during the performances please, this room is very live acoustically and everyone will hear you. :-)

**We are unable to provide a separate soundproof room for viewing this event. These shows are very very pin drop quiet so please consider that when deciding what ages are appropriate. No cry room available at this venue and even voices in the lobby will be heard in the concert space.
