Event description

Description

Presenter Joshua Coffy will draw upon his extensive experience and that of fellow artists to share information about getting your artwork into galleries in the Bay Area AND reaching out to galleries in cities away from home.

We'll also hear from ArtSpan's Program Coordinator, Claire Frost, about ArtSpan's local Art-in-Neighborhoods Exhibitions Program that connects artists with exhibitions and artwork rentals at local businesses in San Francisco.

About the presenter:

Joshua Coffy is a self-taught artist living and working in San Francisco. He grew up in a variety of locales from Ohio to New Mexico to Florida and finally California. Moving from one region to another helped to shape his cultural views of the world as well as inspire him to create art in unique and varied ways. Coffy draws inspiration for his mixed media paintings from the natural world, scientific illustrations and his love of animals. Josh’s work includes many layers of textures including paper patterns, maps, newspaper articles, and acrylic paint. Much of his work deals with animals and how humans relate to the birds and mammals all around us. His work is usually a light-hearted and whimsical approach to our ideals about animals. He has created a sense of symbolism and meaning with many of the images he paints. Illustrating the conversation between man and beast with a wink and stillness for you to make your own decisions about what the image is saying.

About Claire Frost:

Claire joined Artspan in fall 2017 when she returned to San Francisco after a two-year hiatus in Chicago where she received her Masters in Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her studies focused on the intersection of identity and historiography and the way in which artists’ communities are documented. This research allowed her to blend her interest in archival materials with theories of information distribution and artistic practice/process. She also applied this work to COLLABO, the apartment gallery she co-founded in Chicago, and which continues in both physical and web-based form in San Francisco and New York. At Artspan, she oversees the Art in Neighborhoods program, which allows her to work closely with the large, talented, and diverse body of Artspan’s artist members. When she’s not thinking about or seeing art Claire is probably at a farmer’s market, cooking, or riding her bike somewhere around the Bay Area.
