Description

Renée Petropoulos and Arturo Hernández | We Will Congregate: Platforms & Wool
Exhibition | October 30 - December 13, 2019
Reception | Wednesday October 30, 2019 | 6- 9 PM
Atrium Gallery | 1639 18th Street

Artist Renée Petropoulos and Oaxacan artisan Arturo Hernández’s We Will Congregate: Platforms & Wool is based on handwoven rebozo blankets created by Hernández with artisans from LA’s Oaxacan community. Focused on forgotten forms of knowledge, such as the craft of weaving, that immigrants carry in their bodies, the work speaks to the challenges of translation and transliteration as well as literary traditions from the Global South and the North, and includes a sculptural and sonic installation in 18th Street’s Atrium Gallery as well as a live backstrap weaving demonstration and workshop in Virginia Avenue Park and a directed reading in Tongva Park.

ACCESSIBILITY: Our gallery and event spaces are fully accessible, with ground level entrances with no steps. Upon requests for assistance, we will make programmatic aspects of our projects available in accessible alternative formats. You can email requests or questions at communications@18thstreet.org.
