Event description

Description

The Teachers College Jaffe Peace Corps Fellows Program will proudly host a free performance of “Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale” on Friday, December 1st from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Cowin Center, Teachers College, Columbia University.

The three talented actors of the Harlem KW Project will invite audiences on an analogous journey in Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale, a multifaceted exploration of issues embedded in the gentrification of Harlem through a fusion of spoken word poetry, theatre, and song. The idea for the show sprouted from a Facebook status by Jaylene Clark Owens, one of the show’s creators:

It’s time to stop dipping a toe in here

Wading in a little bit there

I need to jump back into this Sea World of poetry like I’m Shamu

Heavy

Too much gentrification going on in Harlem to get light

Time to spit killer rhymes, with killer lines, of killer tales

Cuz Harlem is looking more and more like the belly of a killer whale.

“When I saw the show in the spring at the Harlem School for the Arts, I was hopeful that the performers would agree to come to TC so that the Peace Corps Fellows and our whole community could experience this thoughtful and beautiful performance, ” shared Elaine Perlman, the Director of the Jaffe Peace Corps Fellows Program. The Harlem KW Project, LLC encourages audience members of all backgrounds to “think critically, learn more, take action, and support the arts.”
