4th May 2021 marks the 43rd anniversary of Altab Ali Day. It commemorates the racist murder of a young Bengali man in 1978 and the transformative events that followed.
East London’s Bengali community mobilised quickly with mass demonstrations, meetings and sit-down protests. Their actions were a turning point in resistance against racism and discrimination in Britain.
Join activist Ayub Korom Ali and artist and trade unionist Dan Jones as they recall the ground-breaking year of 1978.
Speakers
Ayub Korom Ali moved to East London aged thirteen, and went to work at 16 as a machinist. In 1978 he got involved in Bangladeshi youth politics, then gained a degree as a mature student from Ruskin College, Oxford and an MA. A previous Newham Labour Councillor, he spends half of his time in Sylhet, running a school and being active in local politics.
Dan Jones is a longstanding Cable Street resident, trade unionist activist and artist. He first worked as a youth worker in the local area, then in social work with migrant families. His exuberant paintings celebrate the history and the diverse communities of East London.
Brick Lane 1978: The Turning Point
This event is part of the Brick Lane 1978: The Turning Point project, which is exploring the anti-racist uprising led by East London’s Bengali community in 1978, including a pop-up window exhibition taking place at the Four Corners gallery on Roman Road, 4th - 28th May 2021.
We are looking for people who remember these events, to record their memories and create a vital record of this watershed moment as told by those who were there. A collection of never-before-seen photographs by Paul Trevor, documenting the events of 1978, is guiding the search.
You can find out more about the project here.
