Event description
A look at New York State's past health challenges and what it means for building back better from COVID-19

About this Event

To promote exciting visions for New York State post-COVID-19, the conversation will discuss how New York has experienced past health crises, including health justice and community experiences, and resulting innovations. What can we learn from past medical challenges and health crises? What are we learning from COVID-19 and what does that mean for building back better? How will rebuilding the state impact different communities, and where are there opportunities or challenges?

We will hear from community health leaders, medical historians, state archivists, and architecture and design experts from New York and whose work relates to the state.

There will be ample time for Q&A and after the event attendees can share how they think COVID-19 will change New York State over the next decade. Attendees will also be invited to contribute to the NYS Library’s Personal History Initiative to document New York State experiences throughout COVID-19. Schmidt Futures will share background on the Reimagine New York Commission.

In conversation:

  • Prof. Sara Carr - Assistant Professor of Architecture, Northeastern University
  • Dr. Howard Markel - Physician; Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine, University of Michigan
  • Vicki Weiss - Senior Librarian, New York State Library

Featuring members of the Reimagine NY Commission:
