San Francisco has received a massive amount of national and international attention over the past couple of months for its crime and safety issues.
But what can us San Franciscans do to flip the script and better protect our 7x7 city? Do we have to wait for City Hall to legislate or are there other actions we can take in the next 6-12 months to buck the trends, change the narrative, and feel safer?
We’ll brainstorm innovative solutions with a variety of public sector, private sector, and non-profit leaders from the community — plus you!
Moderated by Ben Kaplan, founder of We San Francisco, key topics we’ll explore include:
* What can be learned from other U.S. cities that have dramatically improved violent crime and property crime rates
* How crime and safety intersects with other persistent problems like homelessness and drug addiction
* Whether or not staffing more police officers is the ultimate solution to reducing crime and feeling safe
* How crime and safety issues disproportionately affect specific groups in the city such as Asian-Americans, Latinos, and the Black Community
* Whether or not San Francisco now has a brand image problem that impedes potential solutions
* How recent outrage over violent crime can create the kind of collective will needed for rapid change
We’ll leave time at the end to socialize with like-minded community members, organize for community action, and share a beverage or two.
ABOUT WE SAN FRANCISCO:
We San Francisco is a new non-profit devoted to the idea that our most challenging local problems are solvable if we all come together with a unified vision at the community-level. Our REIMAGINE 2025 project is a first-of-its-kind community-led initiative to create development and improvement plans for every San Francisco neighborhood — plans that tackle pressing issues such as crime and safety, homelessness, housing costs, education, the drug crisis, small business support, and resident quality of life. From the Richmond to the Tenderloin, Chinatown to the Mission, and the Castro to Bayview, WE are San Francisco and WE can change San Francisco for the better.
