Have you been asking yourself this question? Maybe you’ve had a rewarding work life so far, but something is tugging at you. Maybe now that you’ve taken care of your family responsibilities or debts or career goals, you are feeling a restlessness… a wondering.
You see the needs of those around you, you sense injustices in the world, you feel a longing to use your experiences, insights, and passion to make the world a better place, to leave a legacy, to do something more.
And the world needs you.
But where to begin? How do you discover the work that your heart has been calling you to do?
ReIGNITE: An Encore Career Program of the Ignite Institute at Pacific School of Religion for Changemakers in Discernment, in partnership with Mather LifeWays
This program of discernment, study, and training is designed especially for late career or post-retirement individuals seeking to engage in life-long learning and to apply their professional skills and life experience in new ways as agents of positive social change.
Through a four-day intensive, this program will facilitate personal inventory, incorporate spiritual practice and social analysis, and offer opportunities for immersive social change field work to refine and hone a participant’s contribution to social transformation.
These workshops will feature a combination of lecture, movement, peer discussion, experiential exercises, spiritual practice, and reflection. (While we will address some of the frames and impacts of Christian theology during the intensive, our approach is more spiritual than religious in nature. )
What You Will Learn:
- Discern and identify your own spiritual values and achieve greater clarity about the needs for social transformation.
- Identify and dismantle personal barriers to engaging more effectively with changemaking in the world.
- Deepen your spiritual practice for resiliency and strengthening your commitment for a better world.
- Inspire effective and collective action in the world rooted in theological reflection and social analysis.
- Connect to various avenues and networks of social change to build community of supportive changemakers.
- Develop a practical plan of next steps.
Module 1: Identity and Belonging
The first module provides tools for identifying your deepest spiritual values and narrating the effect of those values on your life and work. These tools will also help you to discern various barriers to taking more effective action in the world and developing spiritual practices to clear away those barriers.
Module 2: Belief and Practice
This module invites a proactive development of a “theology of social transformation” by assisting you to articulate core beliefs about the world and ways to think about the world’s many religious traditions and wisdom practices for effective action.
Module 3: Passion for Purpose
This module offers various ways to articulate one’s own passion for social change and for discerning more particularly a mode of changemaking that one feels especially called to engage. Broad or diffuse commitments are honed and refined for the sake of addressing what currently is emerging in the world for the good and how you can lend your distinctive skills to that work.
Module 4: From Discernment to Decision
This module draws on the learning and insights of the previous four modules to assist participants in developing a practical and doable plan for engaging in social changemaking.
