Statement of Need:

Clinicians who are currently treating the athletic patient population may not be aware of the clinical techniques and nuances required to deliver high quality care to athletes of different genders. Although there are similarities, the clinical approach to sports medicine care for the athlete is not ubiquitous when considering the differences in anatomy and response to treatment across the male, female and transgender body types throughout the lifespan. This activity is designed to addresses the differences of gender in relation to sports medicine care, specifically for the female athlete, and how clinicians need to be educated on the various injuries or ailments they may encounter in order to provide the best possible clinical outcome and return to play protocol for the female athlete.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how gender and body types play a role in the decision making process for sports medicine clinical care.
  • Identify injury prevention strategies for low, moderate and high level athletic activities.
  • Determine the most appropriate treatment plan and subsequent rehabilitation protocol for the female athlete based on injury presentation.
  • Establish treatment protocols for the female athlete who may encounter pain or loss of mobility as a result of ACL tear, concussion, running/triad injuries, contact sport injuries, strengthening/conditioning injuries.
  • Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary team and communication in providing optimal outcomes in female athlete return to play.
