REGISTER FOR TRAINING: Community Cold Weather Shelter
Community Cold Weather Shelter. In March of 2016, Butler Homeless Initiative opened a cold weather shelter in partnership with the First Church of the Nazarene, located at 1st and Taylor in El Dorado. The shelter was utilized by community members facing crisis each night it was open. This winter, BHI hopes to operate the shelter during the entire cold weather season. The shelter is a community staffed program, and made possible in large part by community volunteers, community shelter donations and community financial support. We need your help to ensure this service stays in place for the most vulnerable population in our community. A minimum of 2 registered volunteers are needed per shift the ensure the shelter will open each night from November 1, 2016 - March 31, 2017.
Volunteer Shift 1 (8pm-12am). 2 volunteers needed each evening. Volunteers on this shift can expect to check-in shelter guests from 8:30pm- 10:30pm. These volunteers will provide company and fellowship to our guests until "lights out" for our guests at 11pm. After 11pm volunteers will be expected to monitor the shelter for safety and assist with tasks necessary to operate the shelter such as starting laundry, light housekeeping etc. until the shift ends at 12am.
Can anyone volunteer? Anyone over the age of 18 years who can pass a background check is welcomed and encouraged to volunteer!
What kind of background check? Everyone who signs up to volunteer is checked for sex offenses and violent offenses through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation Offender Registery before being able to help staff the shelter. By registering, all volunteers consent to being screened for sex offenses and violent offenses.
Can I bring my children? Children 8 years of age or older are allowed to accompany a parent or guardian for a volunteer shift. There must be a minimum of 2 adult volunteers at all times, so while children can accompany an adult volunteer, they cannot fill a volunteer slot. (Children of all ages are allowed to stay as GUESTS at the shelter if accompanied by a parent or guardian.)
How many volunteers per shift? A minimum of two volunteers per shift is required for the shelter to operate. This is why it is so important for the community to support the shelter- without two or more volunteers the shelter may not open for the night.
Can a group volunteer? Yes! If you have a group of more than two who would like to volunteer together, contact the event organizer on this page and we will get your group registered!
Do I HAVE to complete training to volunteer? Training is so important to ensure volunteers are prepared to respond to situations that can occur. Volunteers who have not completed training are allowed to volunteer only if the other volunteer on that shift has completed training so they can train the new volunteer “in the field.”
When can I attend training? Training will be held once per month at the First Church of the Nazarene. All dates are Monday evenings, 6pm-8pm. Upcoming dates:
2016: Oct 17th, Nov. 21st, or Dec. 19th
2017: Jan. 16th, Feb. 20th
