Event Details

Attendees will be asked to sign in during class sessions & prior to PTA & the Law.  Lunch will not be provided, so please bring a brown bag lunch for the lunchtime session.

1:15 pm - 4:45 pm – PTA & the Law - PTA & the Law is a vital training for your entire board and school principal. PTA & the Law deals with state & federal rules and regulations for running a charitable, tax-exempt nonprofit corporation in Washington State and will explain how these rules can and do affect your PTA. 

4:45 pm - 5:00 pm – Closing & Door Prizes

Class Descriptions

Session 1:

Reflections 101 - Learn how to conduct and promote a successful Reflections program in your PTA community.  Recommended for all Reflections chairpersons or board members who will be running a Reflections program.

Advocacy & Legislative Basics – Learn all the basics of a legislative advocacy program.  This class will cover the role of the legislative chair at all levels as well as the variety of resources available and avenues of effective advocacy.  Recommended for all PTA members, especially legislation chairs and presidents.

Treasurer’s Basics – Intended for treasurer’s to familiarize themselves with their elected position and the responsibilities as the custodian of their PTA’s funds.

Secretary: More than Just Minutes – This class will touch on all aspects of being a successful secretary!  Learn the what, how and why of keeping records, what does and does not go into minutes, and how to assist in preparing meeting agendas.

PTA President – Plan to Succeed – To be a great PTA president, first you need a great plan! This class will guide you through your most important jobs as a president. You will learn about building and leading your team, chairing board and membership meetings, the essential role of communication, critical aspects of legal compliance in nonprofits, and how to develop relationships that will allow your PTA to work collaboratively with your school administration and community leaders. Be prepared for a productive year!

Membership Boot Camp – WE WANT YOU to deploy completely new tactics for increasing PTA membership! It’s time to give your old strategy the boot, and join us at “basic training” to Reboot your Local PTA Membership Strategy.

Recommended: Membership and all board members

Roles & Responsibilities of the Board – This presentation will help all board members understand the basic responsibilities of their positions.  It will also cover items such as advocacy, fiduciary responsibility, membership and outreach.  This class will review the four basic PTA elected positions – president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Session 2:

PT Avenue – More than Just a Membership Database – Join us for this informational class where you will learn about the PT Avenue membership data base.  This class is recommended for all membership chairpersons.

Committee Chairs – Group management is the modern way of running a business, especially for nonprofit associations such as PTA.  Every PTA should organize its committees strategically so the work contributes to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the association.  This class will cover the recruitment, training, expectations, money guidelines, mentoring and retentions of PTA committee chairs.

PTA & School Administrators: A Partnership – PTAs, school principals, superintendents and school boards need to build successful partnerships to reach our common goal.  Success for every child.  Learn valuable techniques for communicating and understanding the similarities and differences of each partner, and discuss how to make the most of these pivotal relationships.

Foundations of FACE – Family and Community Engagement is integral to the success of your PTA.   Learn the aspects of FACE that will help your PTA to be successful.

Ready, Set, Go! – This class will help all first time board members, struggling PTAs and officers who need ideas.  We will discuss how to get the new PTA year organized and off to a good start. 

Secondary PTAs:  Support, Sustain, Succeed – A broad introduction of what a secondary PTA could be with ideas to help you support your community, define your role at the secondary level and serve your members as you succeed in reaching the finish line in high school.
