Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

It can be difficult to relate to someone who has had a vastly different life experience than you have. Not only do we lack the head knowledge of what refugees go through, but we have no way of understanding the feelings they have experienced. Come on October 14 and experience a four hour continuous live role play where groups of ten escape from their homes, make decisions about where to go, survive the journey, and try to get resettled into another nation. You will pick up some head knowledge about the refugee process, heart knowledge about how it might feel, tools to better serve refugees, and hopefully be equipped to befriend a refugee.

FAQs

What is a live continuous role play?

Basically, you will be pretending to be someone fleeing from their home as you interact with your party and other role players throughout the experience. Your character will be yourself, but your behavior will be reacting to the scenes and choices put before you as though it were reality (within the rules of the role play). You will never break character unless it is necessary. The rules will be explained upon arrival. The goal is to create an artificial environment where you actually forget that you are in rural Missouri and start engaging with the story line as though you were actually in it.

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Kids 10 years and older can sign up for the kid friendly spot with their parents. They are taken out of the most traumatic elements of the experience, but they will still witness and walk through difficult realities that can shape their understanding and empathy, so the decision about what kids come is up to the parents based on the maturity level of each kid. Our goal is to help each parent feel comfortable with the decision, so you can email back with specific questions. Last year, we had over a dozen kids go through the experience and there was no negative feedback because the parents prepared the kids mentally and emotionally to be able to process things that might happen.

What level of fitness is needed to complete the experience?

A person of average fitness will have little trouble with the physical demands of the experience if the group works as a team. There is opportunity for running and manual labor, but not every participant has to take on that level of physical activity. However, if taking a brisk walk of 200 yards through uneven terrain is difficult for you, you might want to pass on this opportunity.

What can I bring into the event?

One of the challenges of being a refugee is the lack of preparation. You might be temped to come with full Boy Scout or Army ranger gear, but you will be better served if you take no thought about preparation beyond a coat if the weather is cold. Leave your cell phone and other gadgets in the car.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Feel free to email RefugeeExperience2017@gmail.com at any time with questions.

What's the refund policy?

Refunds will be given seven days in advance upon cancellation so that we can re-fill the spot. Refunds go back on the credit or debit card from which the order was made.

Where should I park?

Parking will be on the lawn at the address.

How early should I arrive?

Plan on coming 15 minutes before your time slot so that your group can complete registration.
