Event description

Description

Over the past 30 years student populations have become much more diverse in terms of their physical, emotional, mental health and learning needs. Meeting these needs comes with challenges for educators and parents, but also opportunities to enhance education for all students. This 1.5-day Self-Reg Institute will look at diverse student needs through the lens of Self-Reg, Dr. Stuart Shanker’s framework and method for understanding stress and managing energy and tension. Dr. Susan Hopkins, Executive Director of The MEHRIT Centre will engage and energize attendees with a comprehensive program that dives in to the brain and body science of stress—both the positive stress that is necessary for growth and the negative stress can interfere with students’ learning, growth and behaviour. Topics and issues to be discussed will include:

  • The impact of excess stress on students behaviour and learning
  • Hidden stressors that are affecting today’s students
  • Shanker Self-Reg: What it is and how it helps educators understand and address the stressors that affect various students with diverse needs
  • The five domains of self-regulation and the five steps of The Shanker Method®
  • Understanding Self-Reg as a process rather than a program, one which can be utilized as a universal platform to help educators meet the needs of all students
  • The role excess stress and hidden stressors can play in internalizing and externalizing problems
  • The role Self-Reg as part of a universal design for learning and the development of flexible learning environments that meet diverse needs
  • Using Self-Reg to tap into and enhance student and educator strengths, and transform negative stress into positive stress
  • How Self-Reg complements knowledge, skills and strategies educators already have
  • How educators can used Self-Reg understandings and strategies to complement existing evidence-based approaches to education and special education
  • Adult Stress: why we need to talk about teacher well-being and stressors that affect educators,
  • How Self-Reg can help us support teachers’ well-being, and as a result, benefit students

Programming will run from 8:30AM - 3:00PM May 3rd and from 8:30AM - 1:00PM May 4th.

We will only be selling full 1.5 day admission (May 3 & 4) tickets.
