Event description

Description

Luther’s “German Mass” inspired the great composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, many featured in this liturgy: Michael Praetorius, Heinrich Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein, Johann Walter and J.S. Bach. Works are presented by soloists, small ensembles, and the assembly itself singing chorales in English.

The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses. While Luther was not alone in efforts to reform the church, among his contemporaries he possessed an exceptionally high view of music and art. These programs explore the 16th century European context and the traditions that developed there, as well as the vibrant and ongoing traditions of music and the arts in the Americas down to today.
