Event description

Description

Jazz contributes to the ongoing renewal of the church and Saint Peter's is one of the original sites of that innovation. Ike Sturm's 2007 Jazz Mass was written at Saint Peter's and has been performed throughout the world. This presentation features the Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz ensemble from LIU Post under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Miceli, and Sturm's group Evergreen. The featured soloists are Ingrid Jensen (trumpet) and Loren Stillman (saxophone).

The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses. While Luther was not alone in efforts to reform the church, among his contemporaries he possessed an exceptionally high view of music and art. These programs explore the 16th century European context and the traditions that developed there, as well as the vibrant and ongoing traditions of music and the arts in the Americas down to today.
