We will reflect on this evolving community's impact on business and the implications for advancing the Latinx community in the workplace. The conversation will cover topics such as intersectionality, the evolution of the vocabulary, assimilation, colorism and more.

Erika Mercedes is the Head of Spectrum and Belonging at Audible, Inc. In her role, she is responsible for leading the creation and implementation of the organization’s global diversity and inclusion strategy, program development and deployment, including establishing metrics and benchmarks, identifying trends in the marketplace, and developing the roadmap that supports Audible’s ability to attract, retain, and unlock the innovative potential of global talent.

Erika has a diverse background in Marketing, Procurement, and e-Commerce. Before joining Audible, she spent nearly seven years at Wyndham Worldwide in a variety of positions across business units, most recently leading diversity and inclusion initiatives. Formerly, Erika has held roles as an analyst and manager at Wakefern Food Corporation and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.

Ronald Mendez joined MediaCom in 2016 as Managing Partner, with over 20 years of multicultural experience. As the multicultural lead Ron plays a key role in all aspects of media and marketing efforts dedicated to the various multicultural segments. The goal of the division is to provide clients with a truly relevant and informative point of view of multicultural markets and audiences across the US, resulting in tailored communications strategies based on in-depth knowledge of consumers.

Since joining MediaCom Ron has helped solidify the multicultural business opportunity and go to market strategies for brands. Ron started his professional career at Conill Advertising, a full service Hispanic agency part of Saatchi & Saatchi. He spent over 13 years within Publicis Groupe before moving over to HAVAS where he led the multicultural discipline for 3 years.

Cecilia Nelson-Hurt is the Assistant Vice President, Diversity & Inclusion for L’Oréal USA. In this role, she is responsible for shaping diversity efforts through innovative initiatives that underscore the company’s commitment to ensuring that L’Oréal USA is an equal opportunity workplace. Supporting the department’s mission to “build the standard in making beauty inclusive,” Cecilia works with leadership across divisions and departments at the company to educate and promote diversity processes and procedures to positively impact organizational effectiveness and employee engagement.

In this role, Cecilia is responsible for defining and implementing the Diversity & Inclusion Training Strategy; leading L’Oréal USA’s Social-Ethnic Diversity Strategy initiatives, and identifying diversity recruiting programs to foster the recruitment of diverse talent. One of her most valued initiatives involves developing and empowering the future generation of leaders through Cecilia’s engagement and support of the NY Coalition of One Hundred Black Women’s Role Model Week and the NY Urban League’s Empowerment Days for Young Men and Women.

Cecilia is an Advisory Board Member of Black Women of Influence, a sisterhood of highly accomplished women who have each been recognized as Trailblazing, Influential Black Women in Business. Cecilia also serves on the boards of YouthBridge NY, The Dinner Table Documentary and the Vogue Knitting Diversity Advisory Council where she helps each organization create diverse and inclusive strategies. Cecilia has a bachelor’s degree cum laude in International Marketing from Pace University.

Cecilia resides in Queens, New York with her husband, Jerome. She is also the proud mother of a daughter, Atrice Cherie and a furry daughter, Dallas Jade.

Moderator: Yai Vargas is a career & diversity strategist who helps organizations develop engaging programs focused on career and leadership development. With a background in multicultural marketing and communications, Yai is a natural born community builder and is known as the networking and LinkedIn Ninja.

Yai is also founder of The Latinista, a national network of women and Latina professionals invested in professional development and career mobility. Today The Latinista offers a series of skill-building, activity driven, hands-on sessions, specifically designed to help identify and sharpen career and business skills required to achieve professional goals. The Latinista has chapters in New York City, Chicago, Miami and LA. #TheLatinista
