Reflecting on Devotionals: Learning from Practitioners

About this event

Devotionals are great ways for church leaders to stay in touch with and deepen the faith of their readers, whether they are members of their congregation, professional colleagues, or friends/acquaintances. Whether it is a priest sending a reflection each day during Advent or a lay person with a calling to write a reflection on life in this moment, there are countless ways devotionals and reflections published through e-mail or on a website can make a meaningful difference in the spiritual life of the faithful. At the same time, the work can be tiring and difficult.

Interested writers and publishers may wonder:

  • What's the purpose of a daily devotional?
  • How do I get started?
  • How do I keep up with writing and publishing? Is there a rhythm?
  • What if the words won’t come?
  • How do I handle a challenging lesson or scripture in a short reflection?
  • What is a good way to wrap up a reflection series?
  • If I'm not the main writer, how do I collect and keep good writers?
  • Is there a balance between honoring the author's work and editing for theological content and/or "brand"?

Join our panel of writers and editors for a conversation about their work on devotionals and reflections published in a variety of contexts. The group will share how they came to writing and editing, what sustains the work, and what the challenges are facing each as they publish to their audiences.

Panelists Include:

  • Scott Gunn - Executive Director, Forward Movement; Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Nathan Kirkpatrick - Founder and Managing Partner, Saison Consulting; Durham, North Carolina
  • Westina Matthews - Adjunct Professor, Center for Christian Spirituality, The General Seminary of the Episcopal Church; New York, New York
  • Amber Noel - Associate Director, The Living Church Foundation; Editor, Living Church Daily Devotional; Dallas, Texas
