Refine {the retreat}

For Women

(please read all the way down to the bottom before making your purchase)

Refine {the retreat} is designed to encourage women to seek the Lord more intentionally, that they might better live out His unique call on their lives.

March 24-26, 2017 in Freemont, Ohio

Retreat House

Two years ago, the first Refine (the retreat} was born out of a God-planted dream. 24 women traveled from various states, countries and cities to gather for a weekend of refinement and rest. None of us knew what to expect. Many of us came heavy laden with baggage and various heart aches, eager and apprehensive about this unknown weekend away. What we experienced together has eluded words. In the years since, none of us has been able to fully articulate the beautiful surprises of that weekend, and if we could, each of us would tell a different story. What we can say collectively, is that God met each of us there as individuals, and ministered specifically to our hearts in ways unique to us.

Refine {the retreat} was never intended to become a thing. It was an inspired weekend, fully orchestrated by the goodness of God, and His passion for wooing the hearts of His women back to Himself.

In the months and years since then, the attendees have prayed about another one. It has always been God’s and so organizing another retreat would only come by God’s invitation and leading.

It’s Time.

After much prayer and consideration, God appears to be opening the door again—but not to the same thing as before. He is doing a new thing.

About Refine

The vison for Refine 2017 comes from Psalm 66:12

“We went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us to a place of abundance.”

God allows trouble and trial to test us, but when He has tested us, we come forth as gold (Job 23:10) After the refining, He brings us to a place of renewal and refreshment—a place of abundance. At Refine {the retreat} we are making space for God to show us what this means to us, as a group and as individuals. This is the place to bring our weary, weighted hearts to Him, and let Him show us what His abundance means. This is a place for worship, rest and reflection, a place for healing, spiritual direction and renewal. This time, we have enlarged the capacity, making space for 40 women—enough to make room for others, but still keep the intimacy that we know is important during a weekend like this.

Come Open

The retreat center we have chosen is a place like no other. Once a private home, turned parochial girls school, turned convent, and now, retreat center, this space is unique, comfortable and rich with hospitality for weary retreatants. This is not a hotel. This is a sacred space specifically designed and curated to help you enter into God’s presence and experience Him in fresh ways. We encourage you to leave your expectations behind you as you enter the gates.

What You Can Expect

Because the guest quarters in which you will stay previously served as bedrooms for the resident Nuns, the rooms are small and simple—but by no means lacking. Every attendee will have their own room. Not all of the bedrooms have a private bath, but there are plenty of bathrooms throughout the guest halls, affording guests the privacy they are used to. Assuming we sell every ticket, there will be no other guests using the retreat center during Refine {the retreat}, which will help you feel even more at home in this lovely space. If a private bathroom is critical to you, there are a handful of rooms at a special price that include this option—you are encouraged to purchase your ticket early, as these rooms will likely be among the first to sell out. Also available are two private hermitages, just across the driveway of the main building, both of these feature a private bath as well.

Throughout the house you’ll discover plenty of spaces for quiet reflection and prayer, including balconies, porches, and a chapel. There are many rooms and hallways to explore! The house includes a small exercise room and an art room (more on this below), as well as ample walking space throughout the gardens and paths. Should you venture out, you’ll discover a walking labyrinth, and many other places along the way inviting spiritual reflection and prayer beneath the canopy of 100-year-old trees.

Every ticket purchase to Refine includes 5 meals, (Friday evening dinner, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast). Coffee, tea, water, and snacks will be readily available throughout the days as well. There are refrigerators available to guests, should you like to bring in special snacks/drinks for yourself. Connecting With The Spirit: Art as thin place

(Optional Art Sessions)

One of the surprise beauties of Refine {the retreat} in 2014 was the art journaling session. Hosted by artist, and Spiritual-Director in training, Christine Hiester. Christine generously shepherded attendees through the process of learning to encounter God through art. This continues to be one of the most treasured memories of the entire weekend.

Christine has graciously offered to host 2 art sessions at Refine, which you can sign up for at ticket purchase. The house has a designated art room which promises to provide a sweet space for this activity. Note: the art sessions are not only for artists. As Christine will show you, art can be a fantastic and unexpected medium for communing with the Holy Spirit. We encourage all attendees to try it—let God surprise you! (Connecting With The Spirit: Art As Thin Place will be offered at 2 times, the art fee coveres the cost of attending once or twice).

The Structure of Refine

The schedule at Refine is more of a non-schedule. Guests will receive a brief weekend outline upon arrival. Because the weekend is intended to give God ample space to move, we see no need to fill your precious time with activity. We have some special things in the works, but you can be certain you will have an abundance of free time.

When Should You Arrive?

Guests are invited to begin arriving at Refine at 1PM on Friday, March 24. The opening of the Retreat will be at dinner, at 6:00PM that evening, and will close at 11:00AM on Sunday morning (March 26).

Getting To Refine

There are a couple of airports within an hour, to an hour and a half of the house, for those of you traveling from out of town. We encourage carpooling to and from the airport, as we are not able to provide a shuttle. There is however, plenty of parking at the retreat center, for those driving in.
