Join the Catchment Sensitive Farming team and the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust Ousewem team to:
- Hear from experts on the benefits of soil health management
- Learn how to interpret a soil report with Hannah Shirt (Lancrop Laboratories)
- Find out what support and funding is available to improve your soil health
Event highlights:
- Hannah Shirt on what makes a healthy soil (chemical, physical, and biological fertility) and how to interpret a soil report.
- Free soil testing for farmers in the Arkle, Widdale, or Gayle Beck catchments (tests include N, P, K, Mg, pH, soil organic carbon and soil organic matter) Bring a soil sample with you!
To take a soil sample, dig at least five holes across your field to a depth of 15cms and scoop out the soil. Remove any bits of grass or roots. Mix the soil from all five holes together and bring about 500g (a mugful) in a plastic bag labelled with the name of the field, the farm and your contact details. For more detailed instructions, watch this short video. https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/how-to-collect-a-soil-sample
The Ousewem team will talk about their project which seeks to improve flood resilience to the villages of Reeth and Hawes by working with farmers to increase the water holding capacity of their land. Ousewem can fund hedges, fences, scrapes, swales, ponds and soil health interventions such as aeration, sward lifting or subsoiling.
A free lunch will be provided! Please indicate beef, chicken or veggie on the next page.
