Event description
Featuring a Performance and Post-Screening Conversation with Sam Phillips and Dave Rygalski

About this Event

The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Sam Phillips and Writer/Director Dave Rygalski for a special program showcasing their new concert film Sam Phillips: Live @ Largo at the Coronet. The evening will begin with a performance from Sam, followed by a screening of the film and a post-screening discussion with Sam and Dave moderated by Scott Goldman.

ABOUT THE FILM

Writer/Director Dave Rygalski documented Sam Phillip’s 2013 shows in Los Angeles at the historic Coronet Theater. The resulting film features her band Jay Bellerose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Eric Gorfain (multi-instrumental), Greg Leisz (guitar), Patrick Warren (keyboards) and the string ensemble The Section Quartet. Around the time the final edits were being made, Sam started making “jittervids” of found photos and vintage magazine clippings in short bursts of motion and wordplay. Inspired by Sam’s jittervids, Dave began inserting them and other found and original footage. All agreed these interstitial elements were the missing ingredient to tie the show together, adding another layer to the concert film structure.

ABOUT SAM PHILLIPS

In addition to her own critically-acclaimed albums, Sam is known for composing and performing the score to Gilmore Girls and the Netflix reboot Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. More recently, Sam composed music for The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel on Amazon and co-wrote the title track for Rosanne Cash’s new album She Remembers Everything. Sam’s song “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us” was recorded by Allison Kraus and Robert Plant on their album Raising Sand which won the 2009 GRAMMY for album of the year.
