THE WIZ

Dir: Sidney Lumet | 97 minutes | 1978 | NR

In this super soul reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is now a shy 24-year-old Harlem kindergarten teacher played by Diana Ross. A snowstorm transports her to the mysterious Land of Oz, presented here as a sprawling dream version of New York City.

What follows is a Motown musical adventure, featuring a cast of all-time greats like the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson (NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture), Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor and Nipsey Russell.

Starring: Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor,

Music by Charles Smalls, Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Anthony Jackson, Luther Vandross, and Quincy Jones; Costumes by Tony Walton; Choreography by George Faison

About Reel to Read: The page meets the screen at REEL TO READ, a curated series of independent and classic cinema. These free screenings, hand-picked by librarians, local authors, and film experts, include a Recommended Reads list based on the movie.
