&

5S with robotics demonstration"

Speakers:

Patrick Duffy, Manager of Projects & Construction, Tampa Electric

Russ Human, Superintendent of Planning & Scheduling, Tampa Electric

John Lacy, Teacher & Robotics Program Advisor / Coach, Jesuit High School

Jesuit Tampa and The Academy of the Holy Name High School's FIRST Robotics team, Stealth Tigers 3164

Abstract:

Patrick and Russ will present how in 2010 Tampa Electric began an initiative to reduce waste in contracted maintenance and construction work. Existing processes were examined, improved and standardized. Departments were reorganized. The results have been significant. Learn how discipline, management of change, measurement, and continuous improvement have turned into a seven figure annual cost reduction.

John Lacy and the Jesuits Tampa and Academy of the Holy Names High Schools' FIRST robotics team, Stealth Tigers 3164, will present how they used 5S to make their space more efficient to design and create their robots.

The Tiger Robotics Program moved from the back of a classroom into new shop space this year. The space is small. Initially benches, tool boxes, and shelves were placed where they fit best. During the year it was noticed the team was inefficient, and small changes were made in layout to improve productivity, but the shop was still a difficult place to work. The students learned about 5S and applied their knowledge to improve layout and storage. Come see how the next generation is being introduced to Lean thinking in a very practical way.

The students will describe their league and demonstrate their robots. These robots perform relatively difficult tasks. They are designed and built by students in a very short timeframe and compete in a league of over 2,500 teams. It will be fun, interesting and a good demonstration of what is working well in our often criticized educational system.

Lean Construction Institute (LCI) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1997. The Institute operates as a catalyst to transform the industry though lean project  delivery using an operating system centered on a common language, fundamental principles, and basic practices. We have these broad goals:

Transform design and construction

·         Promote ever-wider acceptance and use of lean principles, practices and tools on design and delivery of projects

Set standards for lean performance

·         Common language and fundamental principles

·         Basic practices

Provide education for lean project delivery

·         Awareness, learning and understanding of tools and techniques

·         Catalyst for action

Conduct research to promote continuous improvement

·         Robust program of basic and applies research evaluation

·         Translate findings into transformational tools & techniques

Sponsor Communities of Practice for continuous learning and application

·         Established in major markets nationwide, expanding into new areas over time

·         Developing strong ties with academic and industry organizations

·         Expanding understanding of Lean: fostering networking and mentoring

The Central Florida Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Central Florida. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
