Description

Anxiety is not all bad. A healthy dose can help us prioritize, focus and even boost our performance.

Too much, however, can result in avoidance, depression, perfectionism, irritability and more.

As parents, how do we know what is “typical” anxiety vs. when to seek additional help? And what steps can we take to help reduce our child’s experience of anxiety?

In this month’s free Lunch and Learn, Jonathan Dalton, PhD and Founder of the Center for Anxiety and Behavioral Change will present:

“Practical Strategies for Parents to Use to Help our Children with Anxiety"

Dr. Dalton will focus on specific skills that parents can use to respond to anxiety in their children and teens.
In particular, he will discuss:

  • the central role that avoidance plays in anxiety,
  • how and when parents can use planned ignoring or redirection as a response to anxiety symptoms,
  • how offering reassurance to a child can actually strengthen anxiety over time, and
  • how parents can appropriately teach their child healthy coping strategies.

In addition, we will watch a brief video that demonstrates the effective use of these strategies.
