Event description
A conference at Dunglass, East Lothian, 13th/14th July 2022

About this event

Representatives from Scotland’s Garden & Landscape Heritage, the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, and Berwickshire Naturalists’ Club are collaborating on a project to share knowledge and raise public awareness of the significance of the Dunglass Estate, which is situated on the border of Berwickshire and East Lothian.

Dunglass was one of Scotland’s finest examples of the late 18th century picturesque style of landscape design, and although many of the core features have been lost, the basic structure can still be recognised. Co-organiser Bill Brogden explains -

“Dunglass is a most sublime designed landscape, now in magnificent fragments – a colossal earthen fortress magicked into an 18th-century garden, a perfect shell of a 14th-century church, and the earliest of picturesque wooded glens. Join us to celebrate this wonder.”

Attendees will be welcomed by the estate’s current owner, Simon Usher, and speakers include Lizzie Swarbrick, John Dent, Bill Brogden, Sally and Ken Wilson, Ben Tindall, James McCarthy, Alison Tymon and Ian Gow. As well as lectures, there will be tours, an exhibition, picnic lunches and a supper.

The conference will cover the estate’s medieval history, its archaeology, topography and geology, military history and fortifications, the origins of the landscape’s picturesque design, international influences, the Enlightenment, its recent history, and current management.
