TRICKS:

A young single mother does what she has to in order to make sure that her son is cared for in the best way possible. A poignant comedy based on a true story that everyone can relate to.

The story involves a mother who goes to great lengths to protect her son from learning about her true profession, a son who goes to great lengths to protect his mother, and a total stranger who goes to great lengths to protect both of them. This adult themed play can be referred to as a comedy about “family, maybe not The Brady Bunch, but family nonetheless”.

MEET THE WRITER:

Lloyd Schwartz is the son of TV mogul Sherwood Schwartz and has worked alongside him since the late 1960’s. He has teamed with his father on many Brady Bunch projects, often as writer or producer. He helped write and direct A Very Brady Musical in 2008. He also has written for TV series including Alice, The A-Team, and Baywatch. In 1988, he helped create The Munsters Today, a revival of The Munsters. In 1985, Schwartz co-founded The Storybook Theatre of Los Angeles with his wife, Barbara Mallory.Storybook Theatre has been honored by both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.

MEET THE CHARACTERS:

When Louise was in her mid-20’s, she made a bad decision by having an affair with her boss who promised her the world but left town when she decided to have their love child. When Louise was in her early 30’s, she made the situation worse when she turned to prostitution. What was at first easy money has now become more difficult as her son has grown and is becoming more aware of what mom does for a living. She has always told him she is a private tutor and the “johns” who come to their apartment are her students but as the boy has grown, and the internet puts the world at his fingertips, he has grown wise to her prevarications. She needs help. Enter Vernon.

Vernon had at long last met the love of his life. While in the Navy, he found Warren and the two decided to settle down once they retired from the military. But you make your plans and God laughs. It is said that what you do in your 20’s you pay for in your 40’s but Warren’s past caught up with him in his thirties as HIV/AIDS claimed his life. Now alone, Vernon seeks to pick up the pieces and fulfill his promise to Warren that he would write the Great American Novel. Taking a job with a temp agency, Vernon answers an ad to “babysit” most evenings for a single mom. Figuring it will give him time to write, he arrives at Louise’s doorstep … and meets the 12 year-old baby.

Adonis has lost his childhood. Forced to grow up faster than any child should have to, he has shouldered the consequences of his mother’s poor choices. When your mom has turned to prostitution to earn a living, and has had one too many scrapes with the law, Social Services can’t be far behind trying to take you from your home and into protective custody. And that would be worse than the parade of men visiting your mom at all hours of the night. Better to keep her secret from the world until Vernon comes into his life.

Mrs. Lewendowski has devoted her life to child welfare. A wide-eyed social services recruit so many years ago, she has become jaded to the shinanagans of her clients. And just when she thought she has seen it all, she meets Louise and her son, Addie. Louise may have bamboozled her son and the family court judge with her story of being a private tutor, but Mrs. L knows better. Just when she’s about to snap the trap shut and put Addie into foster care, along comes Vernon who seems ready to do what ever it takes to keep her from doing her job.
