Event description
BankPlus Presents The Red Beans & Rice Virtual Cooking School Benefitting Stewpot Community Services

About this event

Join us on November 11th for the FIRST EVER virtual cooking led by two of Mississippi's most awarded Chefs, Derek Emerson and Connor Wolf.

The BankPlus Red Beans & Rice Festival benefitting Stewpot has been a Metro area staple for many years. The health and safety of our friends who support us is our priority. Due to the rise of COVID cases in our state and around the world, we have decided to create a new and fun event that you can enjoy right from your kitchen at home!

Everyone who purchases a ticket will receive a meal kit filled with all the ingredients you need to create Chef Emerson & Wolf's famous Red Beans & Rice recipe. We encourage you to participate with your friends and family, as each recipe feeds up to 10 people. Tune in to our livestream from The Cooking School at Livingston on November 11th at 6:00 pm to join our chefs and cook with them live from your home.  Details regarding meal kit pick-up and delivery options will be announced soon. A Zoom link will be sent out in advance of the event to join and a recording will be sent shortly after the class ends if you are unable to attend live.

A limited V.I.P. experience will be announced soon!

And, of course, we understand that some of you may be on a diet after gaining the COVID-19. However, you can still support Stewpot by sending us a donation!

All proceeds from this event will be used to help support the ministries of Stewpot, your favorite Mississippi Homegrown Charity. The money raised helps to keep the doors open, lights on, and continue to provide for the basic needs of men, women, and children.

Chef Derek Emerson

Derek Emerson is executive chef and owner of Walker’s Drive-In in Jackson, Mississippi. Derek grew up in Beverly Hills, Calif., but spent summers with his grandparents in Meridian, MS. Fresh out of a small culinary school in Memphis, Derek worked for BRAVO! in Jackson, MS. He moved to Atlanta to hone his skills working for Nava, Buckhead Bread Company, and the Blueridge Grill. While in Atlanta, he accepted an executive sous chef position with Dick & Harry’s. During his time there, Dick & Harry’s was voted best new restaurant in the Atlanta Magazine.

After four years, Derek moved back to Mississippi to become executive chef for a new restaurant, Schimmel’s, where he met his wife and partner, Jennifer Emerson. When the opportunity arose for them to buy the nostalgic 1950’s diner in the heart of the Fondren district in Jackson, they snapped it up.

Under his keen eye, Walker’s Drive-in has become a regional favorite written up locally and in national publications such as Southern Living. Derek has also been a James Beard Award semi-finalist as Best Chef in the South. (2008, 2009, 2010)

In 2010, Derek and Jennifer opened their second restaurant, Local 463, in Madison, MS. Local 463 is a restaurant focusing on working with local suppliers and farmers to get the best possible products available.

Derek can be found most nights during the week, doing what he loves best, cooking in one of his kitchens.

Chef Connor Wolf

The culinary passion started early for Chef Connor Wolf. While other toddlers were playing with blocks and toy cars, he was learning how to use whisks, spatulas and tongs in the kitchen with his mother. His grandparents also provided exposure to the culinary world at their Englewood, New Jersey diner.

Chef Wolf started his career in the kitchen at Cerami’s in Flowood, MS as a dishwasher and quickly became the lead sauté cook where he learned the basics of a restaurant kitchen. While still in high school, Chef Wolf worked as a line cook at the Broad Street Baking Company and Café, in Jackson, MS. He later attended the Mississippi University for Women before being accepted to the world renowned Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Program in Miami, FL. While in Miami, Chef Wolf worked as a line cook for Swine, well known for its creative twist on Southern cuisine.

Upon his return to Jackson, Chef Wolf honed his craft at Chef/Owner Derek Emerson’s Caet, Local 463 and Walker’s Drive-in before accepting the position with The Farmer’s Table.
