A New Musical Based on an Old Case.
Written by David Melville
Directed by Melissa Chalsma
David Melville grew up hearing the true story of a murder that took place in 1827 in a nearby village. As he researched the story while writing, he discovered truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
In the village of Polstead, Maria Marten, the mole-catcher’s daughter and William Cordor, the son of a wealthy landowner had an illicit affair. She became pregnant. WIlliam promised to marry her. And then the a baby died under mysterious circumstances and was buried in a field.
Still insisting he would marry Maria, WIlliam takes Maria away from Polstead. She was never seen alive again. What followed involved extraordinary subterfuge, a former convict of an Australian Penal Colony, a school for young girls, a wife located via an ad in the London Times, and 20,000 people attending the public execution of William Corder.
