VIBESQUAD

Searing. Suspenseful. Climactic. From a swirling vortex of gut-rumbling bass and bouncy, glitched-out beats, an explosion rips through the night. The smoke clears. The only creature left standing is the one known as VibeSquaD.

Since 2006 and long before America’s insatiable appetite for all things dubstep was born, the musician, producer and DJ known as VibeSquaD (aka Aaron Holstein) has been dropping ill beats and stomach-tearing basslines on the decks as a DJ. In the mid to late-‘90’s, Holstein toured with the Chicago band Boogie Shoes, and he studied jazz guitar for a few years in the late-‘80’s with the saxophonist/composer Yusef Lateef. To say that VibeSquaD’s musical heritage is rich is an understatement. Much like fellow dubstep hero, Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore), VibeSquaD brings a thorough understanding of musicianship and live performance to the EDM club and festival circuit. Said VibeSquad, “I listen to mostly electronic music these days; I haven’t picked up my guitar in quite a while! I love making music with a computer.”

Bassnectar (aka Lorin Ashton) recently selected VibeSquaD as exclusive direct support for the entire 2012 Vava Voom Spring Tour, saying, “VibeSquaD has that perfect sound in between full-on meltdown and deep, ultra-grinding groove. I’ve seen him slaughter dancefloors and then change it up within seconds, beaming out the purest, sweetest frequencies. It’s an all-around diversity that is magnetic because it’s all custom crafted and ultra heavy.”

Today playing, in his own words, “100% my own music,” VibeSquaD has built a steady cult following of die-hard, bass-loving fans. Combining a blistering fusion of glitchy EDM, hip-hop and loads of funk, VibeSquaD’s brand of dubstep can best be described as American bass music. All of the vocals on VibeSquaD’s tracks are his own. Fans will know VibeSquaD’s biggest hits: “Bass Travel,” “Flipping Acrobats,” “Shine,” “This Afternoon,” and “The Fireman,” the latter featuring ill.Gates.

Even though the visual imagery and sonic reverberations of glitch-hop and American bass music may feel dark and heavy, VibeSquaD’s ethos radiates nothing by optimism and clarity. Said VibeSquaD, “I am dedicated to making music that vibrates positivity, love and light…with ridiculous amounts of bass and a nasty-ass beat, of course!” For VibeSquaD, the time to shine has truly arrived.

ELIOT LIPP

After more than eight years of global touring, seven solo albums, countless collaborations, label-head tastemaking and vital artist-incubator in the USA's most critical beat-making cities (SF, Chicago, NYC), Eliot Lipp's status as an electronic music pioneer is known to scene connoisseurs and weekend warriors alike. Lipp's omnivorous tastes are apparent, from the obvious funk and myriad manifestations of hip-hop though less explicit reference points as jazz fusion, folk and techno. His well-earned reputation as a producer's producer stems, in part, from his craftsmanship. Never content with well-worn breaks and effects, his work incorporates a fetishistic love of analogue gear with sampledelic flourishes, intricate rhythmic patterns and more than a few leftfield surprises. But his melodic instincts and tunefulness are what have earned him such wide appeal, his songwriterly connection to music's storytelling possibilities, even without words.

When Eliot Lipp first arrived on the scene with his self-titled solo album in 2004 (Eastern Development), he seemed to have a fully formed aesthetic out of the gates. Lipp displayed an intuitive knack for teasing earwormy melodies out of rhythmic bangers, and drew from a remarkably mature sonic palette - two qualities that immediately set the young instrumental producer apart from his oft-indistinguishable beatmaking brethren. Since that promising debut, Lipp has played to his strengths while creating an imposing body of work with a style uniquely his own.
After spending formative, collegiate years in San Francisco, Lipp found his next home of Chicago—along with label Hefty Records and the fertile, exploratory music scene that surrounded him—to be an indisputable font of inspiration that resulted in two full-lengths in 2006. Lipp's Tacoma Mockingbird record—named in homage to his boyhood home in Washington State—is a study in contradictions, as back-to-basics hip-hop and electro breaks underpin a more nuanced approach. He soon followed with Steele Street Scraps, a record that makes great use of some of his many collaborators. While it can't be said that his Chicago years resulted in the post-rock phase one might expect from his associates, it seems to have laid the groundwork for greater compositional maturity to come.
After time immersed in Los Angeles' vibrant community of producers, Lipp crossed the continent to set up shop in Brooklyn. His 2007 album, City Synthesis (Metatronix), is notable for its relaxed tempo, while the following year's The Outside (Mush Records) proved to be a thorough artistic breakthrough, his most formally complex and emotionally engaging work yet. Lipp's irrepressible creativity found another outlet in his Old Tacoma Records label, offering the opportunity for more diverse collaborations and a greater range of expressiveness. That freedom yielded 2009's Peace Love Weed 3D: a release that upped the electronic ante and supplemented his boom-bap instincts with futurefunk details. He followed this with collaboration from long-time friend and producer Jasia 10 for How We Do: Moves Made (2011).

2012 was a year of milestones for Eliot. He signed with internationally renowned Pretty Lights Music, through which he released his most recent album, Shark Wolf Rabbit Snake, digitally and on vinyl. Shark Wolf Rabbit Snake is a bubbling cauldron filled with anything and everything—from 80’s synthpop jams through jazzy funk to hiphop, with underlying electro breakdowns throughout. As Urb magazine puts it, “this album is for the listener who’s as passionate about different music as he is.” His savant-like creativity earned Eliot recognition by Jay-Z in his blog “Life and Times”, with a premier of Eliot’s latest track “Wonderland”. As Eliot continues to share his signature sound you can count on the unpredictability of what you’ll hear from him next.

NASTYNASTY

In a scene dominated by chainsaw basslines and cliche rave sounds NastyNasty opts to delve into roads less traveled. Using his sound design skills to layer sentimental vocals over futuristic synths and modern bass abstractions he concocts a dance-floor vibe that is both alien and familiar at the same time. He has carved out his following by creating songs that straddle the border between EDM and IDM, fusing elements of Grime, Rap, Dubstep and beyond into a sound uniquely his.

With strong releases on Salva’s ‘Frite Nite’ label, the Dutch imprint ‘Rwina’, the UK’s legendary ‘Planet-Mu’ and even co-prducing a single for Foreign Beggars’ Mau5trap debut, NastyNasty has seen strong support from; XLR8R, The Fader and Fact magazine and is even mentioned in Spin magazines “glossary of terms” under the “Glitch” genre.

This San Francisco Bay Area native he quickly became an integral part in the dance music scene and has played festivals across the globe including; Lightning in a Bottle, Coachella, Noctournal Wonderland, Shambhala, Wobbleland, Snowglobe, Decibel Festival, SXSW and many (MANY) more. He has also toured and supported with some of this generations top acts such as; Diplo, Flux Pavilion, MiM0SA, Mr. Oizo, Datsik, Donald Glaude, Foreign Beggars, Ludacris, The Glitch Mob, Drop The Lime, Nadastrom…the list goes on. He’s also received Dj support from many of the above as well as tastemakers around the globe ranging from Frite Nite affiliates like Salva, EPROM and Ana Sia to top tier acts such as Bassnectar and Zed’s Dead

After 4 EP’s and a handful of singles and remixes NastyNasty is currently busy at work on his debut full length LP for 2013 as well as producing for rappers and vocalists worldwide.

DESSERT DWELLERS

Desert Dwellers are a one of the foremost influences in a genre that they basically expanded from the ground up to be where it’s at today. With a blend of a variety of sources that have been composed to form a heavily weaved set of sounds that coincide in perfect harmony together Desert Dwellers has established themselves in not only their home area of Southern California and New Mexico but across the globe.

Taking a new approach on digital production, the main members Amani Friend & Treavor Moontribe have combined the raw sounds of the natural world with skillfully blended deep bass, earthy percussion, etheric voices and culture crossing instrumentation into sonic incense for the mind and body. With this blend of dance tracks and down tempo sounds they have enabled themselves to give a heightened sense of being to listeners through their musical medium.

Bringing the electronic bass music vibe to the yoga scene, and the sounds of yoga to the electronic dance scene, Desert Dwellers’ global sounds are the bridge between worlds. Joining solid groove with sounds of serenity, their signature aesthetic feels as natural on the dance floor as it does after hours or on the mat. Due in no small part to Desert Dwellers’ pioneering spirit, the very concept of chill-out and sacred bass music has expanded dramatically. These sound alchemists offer cutting edge techniques that blend the modern edge of electronica with ancient and organic sounds, offering a spellbinding hybrid with echoes of our tribal past and future. The result has been the prolific production of genre blending dance tracks and downtempo grooves that make for truly memorable listening experiences.
