Mission
The lab's mission is to create exceptional, engaging art for its audiences, and to create an inviting working environment for professional and emerging artists who love investigation, detail, rigor, and unique, complex, language-laden material.
Description
OUR SHOES ARE RED/THE PERFORMANCE LAB was founded in 1993 by its artistic director Devon Allen. The lab’s emphasis is on development, making work with scope, vigor, collaboration, and innovative working techniques. Its mission is to create exceptional, engaging art for its audiences, and to create an inviting working environment for professional and emerging artists who love investigation, detail, rigor, and unique, complex, language-laden material.
General Information
OUR SHOES ARE RED embraces live performance as a shared event. The Lab places art at the center of our intent, and keeps the work, as much as possible, a vocation and a calling. We develop new work, examine the classic canon, and give voice to exceptional writers. We use music, language, visual landscapes, and environment to create vivid encounters.
While we work in institutions happily, we are not an institution. While the lab occupies space and time, it is best to consider the lab as a free-floating creative force whose members come together to make art wherever and whenever lab members converge. The lab has touched down in Allentown, PA; London, UK; Durham, NC; Bloomsburg, PA; Kilkenny, IR; New York, NY; Chicago, IL;, and Portland, OR, among other sites. The lab is currently based in Portland, Oregon, where Matthew DiBiasio and Devon Allen act as a producing team.
