About this event

In response to numerous requests for brief introductory webinars, the Luria Neuroscience Institute is pleased to announce one-hour webinars on Saturdays.

Each webinar is 1 hour long and 1 CE Credit will be awarded for each. The participants will be able to print out the certificate immediately after filling out a short quiz. The fee for each webinar is $45. There is a separate $5 processing fee charged by CE credit sponsor R. Cassidy Seminars.

Fees: $45 for one webinar.

Executive Functions and the Frontal Lobes: A Brief Review (September 29, 2018)

Topics to be covered:

  1. Executive functions and frontal-lobe functions: are they the same?
  2. Components of executive functions (planning, impulse control, working memory, and others).
  3. Novel approaches to understanding the frontal-lobe functions.
  4. Frontal lobes and large-scale networks (Central Executive, Default Mode, and others).
  5. Executive functions in development and aging.

Dementias: A Brief Review (September 29, 2018)

Topics to be covered:

  1. Epidemiology and demographics of dementias.
  2. Alzheimer’s disease: neurobiology, epidemiology, natural history, neurocognitive characteristics, and diagnosis.
  3. Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease: neurobiology, epidemiology, natural history, neurocognitive characteristics, and diagnosis.
  4. Fronto-temporal dementia: neurobiology, epidemiology, natural history, neurocognitive characteristics, and diagnosis.
  5. Vascular dementia: neurobiology, epidemiology, natural history, neurocognitive characteristics, and diagnosis.

Executive Dysfunction in Brain Disorders: A Brief Review (October 13, 2018)

Topics to be covered:

  1. Executive dysfunction in dementias (Alzheimer’s, Frontotemporal, Lewy bodies).
  2. Executive dysfunction in traumatic brain injury (how mild is “mild” TBI?)
  3. Executive dysfunction in cerebrovascular disorders.
  4. Executive dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders.(schizophrenia, affective disorders).
  5. Executive dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome).

Traumatic Brain Injury: A Brief Review (October 13, 2018)

Topics to be covered:

  1. Types of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Severity and criteria of trau- matic brain injury (TBI): mild, moderate, severe.
  2. Causes and mechanisms of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  3. Cognitive impairment in traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  4. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in sports and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.
  5. Military traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  6. Forensic issues in traumatic brain injury (TBI).

About the Instructor

The series of mental health courses and workshops are provided by Elkhonon Goldberg, Ph.D., ABPP (wikipedia) with the participation of additional select faculty. Elkhonon Goldberg is a clinical neuropsychologist and a cognitive neuroscientist with more than 30 years of experience. Goldberg’s clinical practice spans the whole range of neuropsychological disorders, including traumatic brain injury, dementias, neurodevelopmental disorders, and forensic neuropsychology. Goldberg research includes cortical organization, hemispheric specialization, frontal lobes, memory, traumatic brain injury, dementias, schizophrenia, and other topics. Goldberg has authored several influential books and published a number of research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Goldberg is also a sought-after educator who lectures worldwide. He was a Visiting Professor at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Sydney and has taught at other major universities worldwide. He has mentored a number of students and post-doctoral trainees, many of whom have become prominent neuropsychologists and neuroscientists in their own right. Elkhonon Goldberg is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology of New York University School of Medicine and a Diplomate of The American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Neuropsychology. He is a recipient of The Copernicus Prize for his “contributions to interdisciplinary dialogue between neurosciences and neuropsychology, and the Tempos Hominis medal for international medical sciences education.” He is a foreign member of The Venetian Institute of Science, Literature and Arts. His books The Executive Brain (2001), The Wisdom Paradox (2005), and The New Executive Brain (2009) have been translated into close to 20 languages. He co-authored (with Alvaro Fernandez) The SharpBrains Guide to Cognitive Fitness and is the Chief Scientific Adviser of www.sharpbrains.com Elkhonon Goldberg was a student and close associate of Alexander Luria, one of the “founding fathers” of neuropsychology as a scientific discipline.
