Event description

Description

December 2017 marked the tenth anniversary of the last business-cycle peak in the United States as well as the tenth anniversary of the start of the Great Recession (December 2007–June 2009). During this ten-year period, the longstanding economic and demographic foundations of New Jersey were fundamentally disrupted and transformed: 2017 New Jersey looks quite different from 2007 New Jersey. The state’s recovery from the Great Recession has become less than robust with perhaps a higher degree of uncertainty about future economic prosperity.

Featured speakers at the semiannual R/ECON conference will be James W. Hughes, Distinguished University Professor, former Bloustein School dean, and co-author of the Rutgers Regional Report and Jeffrey G. Otteau, President, Otteau Group, Inc. Michael L. Lahr, Research Professor and Director of the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service (R/ECON), will follow up with a presentation of the state's short-term forecast.

Subsequent to the talks, a distinguished panel that will include Michael McGuinness, Chief Executive Officer, NAIOP-NJ; Thomas Bracken, President and CEO of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce; Michael J. Darcy, Executive Director, New Jersey State League of Municipalities; and Michele N. Siekerka, Esq., President and CEO, New Jersey Business & Industry Association will assess the current economic and demographic status of the state and examine the long-term cyclical economic journey that has brought New Jersey to its current destination.
