About this Event

Recognizing and Building Your Resilience

featuring Dr. Jana Martin

Jana N. Martin, Ph.D. is a psychologist, a mother of two, and a long-time Soroptimist. She is funny, smart, and an inspirational speaker. Her topic for this event is resilience. It will be enlightening and entertaining. We are so pleased to be able to share her with you. Please don't miss it!

The concept of resilience began to proliferate in the early 2000s, and the term quickly became a buzz word for the ability to “bounce back” from adversity or challenges. In the time of COVID19, resilience continues to be front and center in conversations and articles. We know that resilience is not a trait or inborn, but, rather, is something that almost anyone can learn and build upon. Recognizing ways in which you are already resilient is critical to strengthening your skills. Come learn what resilience is and isn’t, how to identify and build upon your resilience, and ways to care better for yourself during challenging times.

Dr. Jana N. Martin received her Master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree in psychology from the University of Mississippi and completed a Child-Specialty internship at Duke University Medical Center. She has held various leadership positions in medical centers, community mental health programs; professional organizations; and volunteer and service organizations. For many years Dr. Martin maintained a private practice in Long Beach in which she saw both children and adults; consulted to numerous schools; conducted training programs and led workshops; and served as an expert witness in legal cases. She was instrumental in the development and promotion of the Resilience campaign for the American Psychological Association (APA), has been commended by APA with a Presidential Citation for exemplary work as a modern-day practitioner, and is a recipient of the Rosalee G. Weiss Award for Outstanding Leaders in Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation. After years of independent practice, Dr. Martin became CEO of The American Insurance Trust in 2010.

Jana joined Soroptimist International of Long Beach in 1992, served as President in 1996, is a member of the Hall of Fame, and received the Women of Distinction in Health Award in 2000. She continues to be a member of SILB even though she is now on the East Coast because it is and has always been one of her favorite and meaningful organizations!
