Description

We are meeting for our third Reclaiming Streets campaign meeting on Wednesday, 10th January 2018 at 6.30pm at Poplar Harca Offices (167a East India Dock Road, London E14 0EA)

In case you’ve missed it, this is a brief recap:

During our second meeting, we identified St Paul’s Way, Devas Street, Empson Street and/or Chrisp Street as areas which could be re-prioritised towards people. In December, we have organised a walk to explore possibilities around re-prioritising these road spaces in Poplar in favour of people - walking, cycling and for communal activity – and ultimately moving towards greater pedestrianising.

During this meeting, we will discuss the outcomes of our exploratory walk and engagement with the local community. We will then discuss the next steps of our campaign.

The meeting’s agenda will follow soon.

What’s the problem?

Air quality in Tower Hamlets is at dangerous and illegal levels, especially in certain hotspots. Poor air quality has some serious and long-term consequences on human health. Children are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of air pollution. We are particularly concerned about emissions from vehicles (from inside and outside the borough), which is the major source of air pollution in Tower Hamlets.

What is Reclaiming Streets?

Reclaiming Streets is a new local campaign around air pollution, which was voted for by a group of residents at our ‘Clean Air Café’ in September 2017. The campaign aims to re-prioritise road space in favour of people - walking, cycling and for communal activity – and ultimately moving towards greater pedestrianisation and healthier streets. We are exploring a possible focus on St Paul’s Way, Devas Street, Empson Street and/or Chrisp Street. With the support and involvement of local people, we hope to achieve a measurable reduction in air pollution in the area while promoting community activity and wellbeing. This may include interventions ranging from greening to traffic-free zones near schools.

What can you do?

Anyone can get involved in the Reclaiming Streets campaign. You can get involved by attending our planning meeting and share your ideas for creating a healthier street environment for all.
