Event description
Join the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity in Minnesota for our annual Founders Day Celebration - "Reclaiming Our Legacy".

About this Event

On Saturday, January 11, 2020 the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated will celebrate 106 years of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service at our Founders Day Celebration. This year our theme is "Reclaiming Our Legacy" and the event will take place in St. Paul, MN at the Wellstone Center - 179 Robie St. E, St Paul, MN 55107, from 10:30am – 1:00pm.

With this event we hope to uplift leaders in service to community, acknowledge a number of our brothers who have exemplified good stewardship of our Fraternity, and build collective appreciation for the importance of cultivating and preserving a powerful legacy both for our Fraternity and for our community.

Legacy is a powerful concept that resonates because it represents both the history that brought us to where we are today, and the possibilities of what may come tomorrow. The barbershop is one of the most constant institutions in Black communities throughout the world - one of the primary keepers of culture that help build and sustain legacy. To honor this truth our keynote will host a panel of barbershop owners who can speak to the role of building and maintaining such a sacred space. Join us to hear their insight and perspective on reclaiming our legacy.

About Phi Beta Sigma:

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

In the state of Minnesota local chapters include: Zeta Nu Sigma Graduate/Professional Chapter,) Pi Eta (University of Minnesota), Gamma Alpha Omicron (Winona State University), and Gamma Omicron Gamma (St Cloud State University)

In 1977 a brother by the name of Edward Robertson noted a need for a chapter here in the Twin Cities to proliferate our great fraternity’s philosophies. After deep consideration he submitted a proposal to another brother in town, Phil Walker. Phil accepted the proposal with interest. Five other fraternity brothers began to meet regularly. This resulting chapter became known as Zeta Nu Sigma.

The Twin Cities received its official charter for the “Zeta Nu Sigma” chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated on September 27th, 1977. The founders of this chapter are documented on record as Edward Robertson, Phil Walker, Amos Haynes, Abe McCarty, Henry Person, Robert Lewis, and Hayward McKerson.
