About this event

The Brennan Center for Justice is pleased to invite you to a free reception in celebration of Inside Congressional Committees: Function and Dysfunction in the Legislative Process, an incisive new book by our very own Dr. Maya Kornberg:

Wednesday, March 1st

5:30pm to 7:30pm ET

Bistro Bis

15 E St NW, Washington, DC 20001

The highlight of the reception will be a conversation between Dr. Kornberg, Associated Press congressional reporter Farnoush Amiri, and Phil Schiliro, a veteran of Capitol Hill and the Executive Branch, to talk about what’s broken in Congress—but also what’s working. Picking up on the themes of Dr. Kornberg’s book, the three experts will unpack the inner workings of Congress and its committees, with a specific focus on oversight, function and dysfunction, and ways to improve the legislative branch.

In her book, Dr. Kornberg, a political scientist in the Brennan Center’s Elections & Government Program, sheds light on how the legislative process works today and emphasizes the crucial role of committees, where bipartisanship and deliberation are more common than one might assume.

Phil Schiliro, Co-Founder of Co-Equal, is a leading expert with over 30 years of experience in government - 26 years working in Congress, including as Staff Director of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and several years in the Obama Administration, including as White House Director of Legislative Affairs, Special Advisor to the President, and President Obama’s liaison to Congress.

Farnoush Amiri is a Congressional Reporter for the Associated Press, whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, MSN, The Independent, Time, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, NBC, and the Chicago Tribute. Farnoush is a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee of Correspondents.
