We begin our program with Opening Remarks and a recap of how we got here. Following this portion our speakers will bring their unique voices "to the table" to help us look at:

  1. The intersectionality of movements for stigmatized communities;
  2. Why language matters (in this case why returning citizen verus ex-con/felon etc);
  3. How tech, research, design and/or organizing (depending on their background) helps in shifting the narrative of those locked out of opportunities for equality and justice.

Post the discussion we will have hackathon project teams report back on and demonstrate advances in their social justice tech innovation. You can expect to see: Open Referral, Clean Slate DC, and Fair Chance Employer Database.

Rebuilding Re-entry Through Visioning & Community Dialogue

  • * 9:00 am to 9:15 am | Opening remarks

  • 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm | Closing remarks

* The event time has changed; we will begin 30 minutes earlier.

Design thinking is a new buzz word, yet the methodology has proven potential for solving some of America's pressing issues. 2 experts will walk us through an intensive session as we really ask: What does it take for D.C. to be re-entry friendly? Mission: Launch, Inc.

Mission: Launch is a Maryland based 501(C)3, which was co-founded by a directly impacted mother-daughter. The organization has advocated for civic technology and inclusive entrepreneurship since it's founding in 2012.  The organization led The Rebuilding Reentry Coalition,  which brought together directly impacted individuals, corporations, government agencies and non-profits with the civic coding community through hackathons and collaborative workshops. Several open-source tools were established focused on record sealing/expungement and services coordination leading to national attention for DC's reentry community.

An MSNBC television crew attended the Rebuilding Reentry DC Hackathon and the co-founders, Teresa Hodge, and Laurin Leonard (Hodge)  were named a "Foot Soldier of the Week" (11/9/2015) on the Melissa Harris-Perry show with Ari Melber. By way of their business and leadership development accelerator for entrepreneurs living with criminal convictions, LaunchPad, they provide technical assistance, shared workspace, and leadership development training. LaunchPad was seeded by a local philanthropic partner and the U.S. Small Business Administration. LaunchPad has resulted in the formation of worker-owned cooperatives, sole proprietorships and limited liability corporations throughout Maryland and Washington, DC.
