Event Details

Join us on Thursday, December 12, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for an online presentation and Q&A Session with the Sasaki-led team, with Rutgers University and Arup, as they present their ideas and strategies for long-term coastal resilience on the Jersey Shore.

Sasaki’s research focuses on the value of “the beach,” a place of special significance to human memory and economy, and a vital component of coastal ecosystems. Their design opportunity looks at the three coastal typologies found across the eastern seaboard of the United States: Barrier Island, Headlands, and Inland Bay. Informed by a close reading of the ecological, economic, and cultural conditions of the Jersey Shore, the Sasaki team’s design opportunities rethink iconic elements of the human experience of the shorethe pier, the boardwalk, and the marinato integrate greater ecological function and help coastal communities adapt and strengthen in the face of ongoing sea level rise and storm threats.

Join this webinar to receive an overview of the Rebuild by Design competition, learn more about Sasaki’s ideas for improving the ecological, economic, and cultural resilience of the Jersey coast, and ask questions of the Sasaki team.

Webinar and dial-in details will be provided in an email once you have RSVP'd.

Rebuild by Design was initiated by President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force as an unprecedented multi-stage regional design competition with a goal of rebuilding areas affected by Hurricane Sandy to be more resilient, sustainable, and livable. The competition has stimulated regional, cross-disciplinary collaboration between state and local governments, international design teams, educational institutions, and the public. Funding for the administration of Rebuild by Design has come from The Rockefeller Foundation, Community Foundation of New Jersey, and other philanthropic and non-profit institutions and shows how private groups can help leverage the resources of the federal government for the good of the public.

About Rebuild by Design

Rebuild by Design marshals the talent of the world to answer a region’s greatest needs. Using an innovative process based on the design competition model, Rebuild by Design places local communities and civic leaders at the heart of a robust, interdisciplinary creative process to generate implementable solutions for a more resilient region.

Originally launched in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Rebuild by Design has generated ten groundbreaking designs to enhance resilience throughout the Northeast US. Rebuild by Design keeps community coalitions connected to the process; explores changes needed in policy, regulation, and operations; and researches the best practices in developing resilience as it helps other regions rethink resilience before disaster strikes.

Through a partnership with 100 Resilient Cities (100RC), Rebuild by Design is bringing its best-in-class design and research-driven processes to more cities around the globe, working to build their long-term resilience. This partnership works to scale Rebuild by Design’s successes from the northeast U.S. to cities around the globe.
