About this event
This set of 4 lectures explores the most violent year of 19th century Europe, a time where revolution threatened to overthrow virtually all of the crowned heads of Europe and their governments. From Paris to Berlin to Vienna, protesters seized state power and tried to introduce democratic reform – only to see most of their work swept aside in waves of armed violence and reaction. We will be looking at key figures of the era including Klemmens von Metternich, Czar Nicholas I, King Louis-Philippe and Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, later Emperor Napoleon III of France among many others.
