REAL Tech Experience Camp 2017
Mon, Jul 10, 2017, 9:00 AM – Fri, Jul 14, 2017, 3:00 PM EDT
Creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and teamwork make tomorrow’s innovators. Barter Theatre’s Project REAL (Reinforcing Education Through Artistic Learning) and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center recognize the need to provide an environment to inspire the creative problem solvers of the future. This week-long REAL Tech Experience will give students the opportunity to explore how to solve a real-world problem through the application of science, technology, engineering, theatre arts, and math concepts (STEAM).
To start the week, Barter Theatre’s Project REAL teaching artists will provide a hands-on experience to explore a real-world problem and personally connect that problem to each student. Then comes the CHALLENGE, which includes programming a robot to score points on a playing field and creating a solution to the real-world problem presented to them at the start of the week. Each day is crafted to allow the students to work with the Lego Robotics experts to gain the skills necessary to create their robots in addition to Barter’s teaching artists who will guide them in the process of creative problem solving through specific theatre tools. The students’ work will lead to a tournament and a final presentation that meets the requirements of the CHALLENGE. Learning through the collaboration of theatre and Lego Robotics will empower students to see how STEAM applies to all disciplines and introduces them to potential future career fields. Participants will also learn valuable life and professional skills that can be applied to any career path they choose.
