Event description

Description

Join us for an evening of learning and listening at The Bindery, hosted by My Life, My Stories and sponsored by Blurb Books!

My Life, My Stories is a local non-profit that preserves the life legacies of seniors in our community. We match a volunteer with one senior, and over the course of several months, the senior's memories are recorded and transcribed into memoirs. We focus on helping underserved populations in the Bay Area including minorities, immigrants, homeless seniors, vets, and LGBTQ elders.

Our volunteers hear inspiring, heartbreaking, and touching stories that, otherwise, would be left untold and lost forever. My Life, My Stories wants to give seniors a public platform to share their amazing memories with the young SF community in a live event.

We'll be feeling all the love this evening. With Valentine's Day right around the corner, we're asking our senior speakers to tell a story about their love for family, a partner, the city of San Francisco... you name it! You may be surprised with what you learn and how much you can relate to someone who may be decades older than you.

We have an amazing line up of diverse older members of our community who have offered to share their own personal stories:

  • Alan: The first openly gay professor in US history, Alan has spent most of his life helping others. His adventures include working alongside Mother Theresa in India and helping Latino and LGBTQ young adults as a therapist during the AIDS epidemic.

  • Ling: A Brooklynite through and through (with the accent to prove it), Ling is sure to bring a smile to our faces with her New York attitude and killer sense of humor.

  • Dee Dee: A trans woman who spent most of her adulthood working the city streets as a prostitute, Dee Dee has the stories and scars to prove she's lived a life most of us wouldn't have the courage to endure.

  • Felicia: Trans woman, Vietnam veteran, HIV survivor of 30 years, and best friend of Dee Dee are all terms used to describe Felicia. She has an incredible life journey that seems straight out of a book.

Come early, grab a drink, meet new friends, and learn something new! The general flow of the evening is listed below.

  • 6:00pm: Doors open

  • 6:30pm-8:00pm: Four unique seniors tell their stories and MLMS volunteers talk about their experience working with their author

  • 8:00pm-8:30pm: Q&A

All ticket sales from the event will go directly back to My Life, My Stories to help more seniors preserve their legacy.
