Real-Life Conversations for Addressing Substance Use with Clients: Practice Tools for Helping Professionals

Susan Kottra, LCSW received her MSW from Loyola University. Her career has been dedicated to agencies serving at-risk and vulnerable individuals in the Chicagoland area. This includes providing neighborhood outreach to Chicago youth at-risk of sexual exploitation, supervising clinicians in residential and outpatient addiction programming, and supervising clinical and case management programs while at Deborah’s Place, a Chicago based organization serving women who are homeless. She is currently working for the DuPage County Health Department as Integrated Care Coordinator, assisting in training others in integrated care programming. While with the health department she has specialized in working with clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health treatment needs.

According to the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health (2016), it is estimated that 9 out of 10 individuals with a substance use disorder never get needed treatment. Persons struggling with substance use disorders need non-judgmental and compassionate care from health care providers to help them reduce their risk of harm. A number of substance use specific treatments require a level of readiness for change upon admission. Individuals who may need help in increasing their “readiness” may thus be less likely to reach out for assistance. The shame and stigma surrounding addiction can also prevent individuals from seeking treatment. As helping professionals, we have unique opportunities to have important conversations about substance use that others do not. This training will introduce practical and real-life strategies for having these conversations that stem from evidence-based approaches such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and the importance of trauma informed interviewing.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Be able to utilize real-life opportunities to have meaningful conversations with clients about substance use.

2. Be able to apply strategies utilizing evidence-based approaches to treat substance use in day to day therapeutic interactions.

3. Describe common addiction-related behaviors that clients display and how to address them.

4. Identify strategies for developing therapeutic rapport including the use of trauma informed conversations.
