The City of Reading holds the distinction of being one of the most impoverished City in the United States.
We will tell you, slow but steady. Progress is being made to revitalize downtown Reading, with thousands turning out for festivals, concerts and other events. We have a new Doubletree Hotel, we have a downtown performing arts center, downtown arena, and we are home to one of the largest and most comprehensive interactive community arts centers in the country – the GoggleWorks. There is new mixed rate housing, an IMAX movie theater, and most importantly, committed community organizations.
We will share: How did we get here? What is Reading’s history (Railroad, Outlet Capital of the World)? What is happening to downtown’s surrounding neighborhoods? Why aren’t developers investing? Are there opportunities for revitalization? What are the catalysts for redevelopment? We will share the good, the bad, and even the ugly.
We will also tour the Goggleworks and talk about its impact on downtown and the surrounding neighborhood.
