Students with ASD frequently have great difficulties with word problems. When students encounter written math problems, it is not the math that causes difficulties; it is the reading. When looking for "key words" fails, students must depend on their understanding of what's going on in the stories to know how to solve for answers. Students must have strategies for reading comprehension as well as ways to understand the types of problem-solving situations featured in these "story problems." Methods for combining the two will be presented.
