Description
BOARDS WITH BRAINS is SVP’s open-to-all nonprofit governance education series. Join us for our 2016 trainings, like this one: Sound financial oversight is key to a nonprofit's mission. This session -- not intended as a bookeeping/accounting fundamentals course -- will familiarize board members with what they need to know to be able to read nonprofit financial statements.
About this Session:
Ever sit in a board meeting and feel lost when it comes time to review the financials? Feel thrown into the deep end without much guidance on what to look for, what's important, and just how things work? Not intended as a bookkeeping fundamentals or accounting basics overview, this session will emphasize the interpretation (not preparation) part of the financial oversight equation.
We'll review how financial statements are prepared, and how to interpret the different financial statements associated with nonprofits. Intended to help nonprofit board members with their fiscal duties, nonprofit staff are welcome to attend, but this session won't specifically emphasize preparation of fiscal statements, rather the interpretation of those statements by boards to ensure a nonprofit's fiscal health.
Attendees of this session can expect to:
- Gain a working awareness of the basic terminology involved in reading financial statements
- Understand the types and context of nonprofit financial statements
- Understand the difference between for-profit and nonprofit financial sttements, and learn how to read them (e.g. ratios, general analysis, etc.)

About the BOARDS WITH BRAINS series:
SVP Boulder County believes strong nonprofits deliver better results. For our nonprofits to be wildly successful, we believe strong leaders – both staff and board – help create adept organizations. Our BOARDS WITH BRAINS professional development series was designed with that in mind. We’ve got a variety of nonprofit leadership topics, as well as ‘tracks’ and levels to help attendees identify which sessions suit them best.
Our per-session fee is a below-market $40. Individuals or organizations can purchase a transferable, 8-punch pass (giving you a $10 discount on each ticket), and, each session also includes a limited number of scholarship slots (just ask).
Please note, SVP closes registration two days prior to each session and all attendees are asked to register in advance. Day-of drop in participants will be expected to pay on site with a credit card (please note, scholarship and 8-pack pricing is not valid for drop-in attendees), and should understand there may not be sufficient quantities of session handouts and materials available for them.
