Discover how Readers Theater brings the written word to life while supporting English learner comprehensibility and speaking confidence.

About this event

Workshop Description

Readers Theater (RT) is a group read-aloud in which individuals perform level-appropriate scripts to tell a story cooperatively. Participants will learn how RT supports development of the learner’s external reading voice (rate, vocabulary, and pronunciation/ comprehensibility) as well as their “internal” reading voice (the voice they “hear” when reading silently), thereby strengthening both oral fluency and reading fluency.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will learn how to guide students through a Readers Theater project from preparation to presentation. They will explore ways that maximize the repetition and noticing necessary to improve fluency in both reading and speaking. Participants will also review the suprasegmental skills of speaking: thought groups, focus words, linking, reduction, and intonation.

This Level 2 workshop is open to Level 1 certified teachers or teachers currently enrolled in a Level 1 Color Vowel Basics course.

Workshop Dates

This course meets on Thursdays from 11 am - 12:30 pm ET (New York time) online with the following weekly themes:

  • Week 1 - Act I: Prologue
  • Week 2 - Act II: The Prosody Pyramid
  • Week 3 - Act III: Rhythm & Fluency
  • Week 4 - Act IV: Break a leg!

All sessions occur online through Zoom, are recorded, and are posted in a private YouTube playlist for those who have to miss part or all of a session. The workshop is designed for live interaction but can be taken asynchronously with permission from Color Vowel. Contact us at if you have questions.

Curriculum and Materials

You will need a Color Vowel Chart for reference as well as a copy of a Color Vowel Organizer, both of which are downloadable from our website. You will also find it helpful to have access to a printer in order to print out copies of handouts and scripts during the course.

Unlike other Color Vowel workshops, most homework in this course will be written. Participants are urged to complete each week’s assignments before the next session as we will be using these assignments as a basis for discussion and reflection.

Upon completion of this course, participants will receive a Level 2 Workshop Certificate reflecting 6 hours of instruction. This course fulfills one of multiple requirements of Level 2 certification.
