Description
UMOM New Day Centers partners with Hands On Greater Phoenix for Read to Me, a weekly literacy program for UMOM children ages 4 and up. Established twelve years ago with only a handful of books and a few volunteers, Read to Me is now a strong and lively program with an average attendance of 30-40 children who interact with 30-40 volunteers each week. The program encourages literacy through positive one-on-one interactions. The children at UMOM look forward to picking out and reading a new book with their volunteer each week and it’s volunteers like you that help them foster a love of reading. This volunteer opportunity is great for individuals, families, civic groups and corporations.
Volunteering Update, March 17, 2020:
After careful consideration and review of resources, it has been decided that UMOM will not allow outside visitors from entering all shelter facilities. This decision is based on several facts including how to best serve an at-risk vulnerable population and to assure the health of staff and volunteers. As a result of this action to not allow outside visitors, UMOM’s volunteer program has been suspended until further notice. Read to Me is consequently suspended at this time.
